Fun Ways to Incorporate Feathers into Your Festival Fashion

Every few seasons, feathers inevitably make their debut on the runway. From embroidery and appliqués found on Gucci and Givenchy pieces to feather prints, it’s clear that designers won’t let feathered fashions fall off the radar. Our favorite feather trends of 2017 have been making an appearance in festivals across the country. Here are some fun ways to make your wardrobe festival-ready!

Fun DIY Feathered Looks for Festival Season

If you’d like to freshen up your festival fashion for spring and summer, feathers are a great option. Not only do they add movement and texture to your look but the hues, lengths, and textures of different feathers also add a nuance of imagination that will take your outfit from boring to beautiful.

With festival season swinging into full gear, including feathers in your daytime or nighttime looks is a great way to add originality, fashion, and flair to your festival look. Here are some fun, creative ways that feathers can enhance your festival fashion!

Jazz up a plain or worn out skirt with feather trim

Remember that old skirt you bought for an interview and never wore again? Add a feather trim to a skirt of the same color. It’s a beautiful way to breathe new life into a plain skirt.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your skirt:

  • Plain skirt

  • Feather trim

  • Scissors

  • Fabric glue

Visit your local craft or fabric store to look for the trim that’s right for your look, as well as some fabric glue. Our favorite looks typically incorporate feathers in the same color family as the skirt base, but this is YOUR creation—pick a trim that you love!

Part of what makes this project so fun is its simplicity; once you’re ready to craft, just glue and wrap the trim the entire way up the skirt using a pair of scissors and the fabric glue you purchased.

Make sure to start at the bottom of the skirt and work your way up while gluing. Also be sure to leave between two and three inches between each layer of trim for the perfect amount of volume and coverage.

Freshen up your festival flats with feathered fashion

When you’re at a festival, comfortable footwear is an absolute MUST. Adding a colorful feathered pin to your favorite flats is an inexpensive and stylish option for those of us who want to be fashionable and comfortable.

To make these feathered shoes, you’ll need:

  • Shuttlecocks with feathers OR a variety bag of small feathers

  • Glue gun

  • Scissors

  • Felt

  • Clip earrings

Begin by cutting the feathers loose from the shuttlecocks. Although we gravitate toward colorful options, you can use any small feathers to complete this easy look. Using the felt and a marker, measure, outline, and cut out two 1x2 inch egg shapes out of the felt. This will be the foundation for your pin.

Using the glue gun and feathers, start by placing feathers at the widest part of your felt eggs and glue them down. Keep layering the feathers in your chosen pattern until the felt is completely covered. Once your feathers have been glued into place, glue the smallest side of the egg to your earring clip and voila! Your first feathered shoe clip is complete and ready to be snapped into place on your flats.

Pro Tip: Keep in mind that using feathers in different colors and sizes will make your feathered looks stand out more; vintage-inspired earring clips are another unique way to take your look to the next level.
